(NEW YORK) Yesterday afternoon, Harper’s Bazaar EIC Glenda Bailey presented the “First Look at Fashion” luncheon, where she presented her top trends for the Spring 2014 season. Guests came to the 44th floor of the Hearst building with views overlooking the city as a mini orchestral arrangement of Julliard students played in the background. The luncheon, which was sponsored by Coach, was the second for the glossy and the proceeds for tickets went to support the Women’s Leadership Council and the Lincoln Center Corporate Fund.
So what were Bailey’s big trend highlights from the recent round of shows? Florals à la Dior, statement necklaces, mules, longer length skirts (preferably pleated), and the boyfriend shirt trend seen on the runway at Alexander Wang. Metallics were a big trend, which Bailey called “fashion’s answer to armor”. Pleats and sheer pencil skirts are everywhere, but as for the latter Bailey advised, “Put on a slip please! I don’t think channeling [Lady] Gaga is a good idea.” Global influences were seen at Givenchy and Valentino plus, fringe seen everywhere from Calvin Klein to Moschino. But who blew it out of the park? Miuccia Prada and Phoebe Philo, of course! Both of which were inspired by art. Bailey likened the Céline silhouette to a current exhibit at London’s Victoria & Albert museum featuring 80’s clubbing clothes. “If you look at those clothes it might remind you of a few happy nights,” she quipped.
But it wasn’t just the clothes that were trending this season. Beauty director, Alexandra Parnass gave the report for lookin fresh faced come Spring citing everything from a well-defined brow, bright lips, and luminous skin to touseled or sleek hair and casually disheveled twists or buns. Major designer moves also made Bailey’s list from Stuart Vevers leaving Loewe to join coach and J.W. Anderson taking his place to Marco Zanini leaving Rochas for Schiaparelli with Alessandro Dell’Aqua taking over his old post, to name a few.
