Supermodels Doutzen Kroes, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, and Carolyn Murphy took to Instagram yesterday to sound the alarm on behalf of the world’s dwindling elephant populations, which are once again under attack by the Trump administration. The models posted beautiful black and white photos of baby elephants and their mothers with the heartbreaking caption “Does my mom look like a Trophy to you?”
The posts came in the wake of news that last week the Trump administration quietly lifted the ban on importing sport-hunted trophies of elephants from certain African countries. In a memo dated March 1, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that in place of the Obama-era blanket ban, the agency will consider importation permits “on a case-by-case basis.”
“The Trump Administration has once again given in to the efforts of the NRA and the Safari Club International and has sneakily issued a court filing that it will allow the importing of elephant and lion trophies from South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia whom are both on the Endangered Species List,” wrote Carolyn Murphy in her post. “We are asking for your urgent support to help us reach out to the U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to stop this from happening.”
The models urged their followers to do their part by reaching out to U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to voice their objections to the lifting of the ban, providing the relevant phone number and email address in their posts.
Emails are OK, but phone calls carry the most weight in Washington, so if you want to help, pick up your phone and make the call. It will only take a minute. The elephants can’t do it for themselves.
