Selena Gomez is getting into the sneakerhead game.
On Wednesday, Puma unveiled a Gomez-designed a capsule with a portion of its sales benefitting the Lupus Research Alliance. The two-piece collection includes a pair of futuristic, all-white sneakers titled Phenom Lux and corresponding mid-calf socks. The sneaks are a Selena-ified version of the brand’s Phenom silhouette and they come with some bells and whistles — shiny gold accents and even a removable ankle bracelet. The socks are also pretty snazzy with mesh windowpane illusion cutouts. The shoes (priced at $110) and sock set (priced at $14) drop April 6 in limited quantities worldwide, exclusively on PUMA.com and in PUMA retail. Puma has pledged $100,000 from the capsule’s sales to fund Lupus research, the autoimmune disease which Gomez has battled publicly.
Gomez has been low-key teasing the collaboration for weeks, test-driving both pieces recently. “It has that chain that makes me feel womanly and makes me feel cool,” Gomez said of the sneakers to Vogue. “It gives you a little bit of sparkle, and it can make you feel like you’re dressed up even when you’re in sweats…I’ve become super into my way of wearing sneakers. I also wear my sneakers with dresses, things that feel pretty…I’ve been wearing some fun socks with my sneakers and it just makes me feel a little bit more feminine,” Gomez told Vogue over the phone from Los Angeles. “I spent a lot of time creating a sock that felt comfortable, chic, and fun.”
Gomez has been a brand ambassador for Puma since last fall, though this is her first foray into design for the athleisure juggernaut. It’s a similar trajectory (first comes brand ambassadorship, then the design collab) as her partnership with Coach, for which she’s currently designing a fall ready-to-wear collection for.
