Vanessa Friedman, chief fashion critic for the New York Times, is writing a biography of the late Kate Spade for Random House. Friedman was the first to get an interview with Andy Spade, Kate’s widower, in the wake of her death last year. Sources are saying Andy has attempted to “influence” the book, but no one has specifically said how.
Philip Green to Break Up Arcadia Group (Business of Fashion)
Sources are saying that Philip Green is looking to separate his Arcadia Group brands, which include Topshop and Topman. Doing this would make it easier to sell off the brands over time. Earlier this summer, Arcadia narrowly avoided going into administration in the UK — which is similar to bankruptcy in the US — when its creditors and landlords voted in favor of restructuring plans to save the company.
Sterling Ruby’s Gallerists Tried to Talk Him Out of Working With Raf Simons (The New Yorker)
Contemporary artist Sterling Ruby launched his first clothing collection in June, but he has long had a connection to fashion thanks to his partnerships with Raf Simons. Despite having already worked with Simons on store designs and show sets, when Ruby was asked to collaborate on a menswear collection, people in the art world tried to talk him out it. “The dealers were so mad at me,” he said. But Ruby went through with it anyway and ended up having a great time. “Everybody was standing up, cheering,” he remembers. “At that moment, I thought, ‘Fuck being an artist — this is wonderful.’” Welcome to fashion, Sterling!
Thom Browne to Take Part In New York Fashion Week — Sort Of (WWD)
Thom Browne is hosting a “performance installation” at Bergdorf Goodman to celebrate his womenswear collection arriving at the store. Titled “The Officepeople,” the event will take place on September 7th. Browne will present his Spring 2020 collection during Paris Fashion Week later this month.
