Designer Kate Spade was found dead in her Upper East Side apartment today, the victim of an apparent suicide. According to law enforcement officials, a housekeeper found Spade hanged from a doorknob by a silk scarf around 10:20 a.m. Sources tell TMZ she left a note and was pronounced dead on the scene. She was 55.
Spade leaves behind her husband, Andy Spade, and the couple’s 13-year-old daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade.

UPDATE: According to TMZ, Spade’s suicide note was found on a bed near her body and was addressed directly to her daughter. It read “Bea – I have always loved you. This is not your fault. Ask Daddy!”
A police source reportedly told The Post that marital problems were at least partly to blame for Spade’s suicide. “It was over family problems,” the source said, “… in her relationship.”
According to Daily Mail, Andy Spade was in the apartment, in another room, at the time of his wife’s suicide.

What a terrible loss. I did not know her personally, but so admired her talent and sense of color. Her books always brought a smile and a sense of joy.
