The house of Balmain is returning to couture for the first time in 16 years! This morning at WWD‘s Retail & Apparel CEO Summit creative director Olivier Rousteing announced the news. Apparently, he will show his first haute couture collection as early as January. The last designer to helm a couture line for the house was Oscar de la Renta.
Balmain might not be the only new luxury name added to the couture calendar this year. When it was announced that Hedi Slimane would take over Celine last January it was reported that he would expand the line into menswear and couture. He made good on his menswear promise, debuting it at his first show for the brand a few weeks ago. So will he show in January?
We’ll have to wait to find out. The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode has yet to release the official schedule for Spring 2019 couture week, which will take place January 21-24. It looks like 2019 is shaping up to be a landmark year in fashion, and it hasn’t even started yet!
