Zac Posen on Summer Camp, Barbie Dolls, and Tomato Timing

The Daily caught up with Zac Posen on the red carpet of the 2019 CFDA Awards to find out about his summer plans and how Barbie and a summer at musical theater camp helped lead him to a career in fashion.

What’s it like to be in the presence of Bob Mackie?
Unbelievable! Bob is iconic. He changed fashion, he changed culture, he changed the role of what a designer meant to the larger public. And he crossed the barrier into entertainment — from stage, to TV, to film. He’s also one of the nicest men ever. Sweetest, nicest man! Paved many ways, and an incredible talent.

Barbie is being honored with the Board of Directors Tribute. Did you or your sister have Barbies growing up?
She did, and I used to make my early dresses on them.

Did she ever do anything weird like cut their hair?
Oh, we did all kinds of weird stuff. I don’t think that’s weird [to cut their hair]! Not in an age of self-identity and self-expression.

Did you ever go to camp growing up?
I did — I went to a few camps. I went to a very progressive camp, and then I went to musical theater camp. It made me not go into musical theater.

Do you have any plans for the 4th of July?
I usually go to my parents place in Pennsylvania. I usually bake my blueberry pie, the recipe is in my cookbook. Hopefully see if there are early tomatoes in the garden. We can’t plant too early. You have to time it. But if you time it just right you get a tomato by the 4th of July.
