“She was tired of just gown after gown after gown, so tonight we wanted to do something a little different,” Wes Gordon explained of the Carolina Herrera pre-fall suit he put on his date Grace Elizabeth in for Sunday night’s Tony Awards. Gordon had just had lunch with Ms. Herrera hours earlier, before making his way to Radio City Music Hall for the event. “We’re just excited to sit back and watch the show,” he added.
Gordon wasn’t the only designer gathered under the massive tent towering over Sixth Avenue on Sunday night— as Anna Wintour’s interest in the theater blossoms it seems so does fashion’s — with Joseph Altuzarra, Zac Posen and Michael Kors joining Tiffany Haddish — Kors’ date — Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, Tavi Gevinson, Paloma Elsesser, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and, of course Ms. Wintour. Altuzarra was on hand to escort his date Indya Moore to the awards show, having dressed the actress (and first time Tony’s guest!) for the event. “It was a dress I designed for the fall-winter runway, and I it paired really well with Indya’s effervescence, joy and energy,” Altuzarra told us. “I think it’s actually a perfect match.” Another perfect match? Brandon Maxwell’s black crepe top and skirt for Amy Schumer, who made her first public appearance with her now-hubby Chris Fischer.
Inside, “Band’s Visit” swept the awards, nabbing a total of 10 trophies including Best New Musical. Other big winners were Andrew Garfield, named best lead actor for his performance in “Angels in America,” Katrina Lenk who took best lead actress for her musical performance in “The Band’s Visit,” and Bruce Springsteen who received a special Tony Award for “Springsteen on Broadway.”
Nordstrom returned as the official red carpet sponsor for the Tony’s.
