We compiled some of the more amusing moments and things we learned during our time in the front row at this season’s shows.
1. Katy Perry’s former stylist, Johnny Wujek, is designing a prom dress collection.
“I’m working on me. I took a distance from styling. I’m still doing costume design, but I’m working on the Johnny Wujek brand. I’m creating a prom dress line. It’s an untapped market and very my demo. I love promo. It’s such an American thing. Everyone has been requesting prom dresses for years. The line is coming out in 2020, but I’ll be debuting in November next year in LA.”
2. Phillip Picardi will remain at Condé Nast through December.
“There’s a myriad of reasons I took the job at OUT, but the one I’m most comfortable saying is that it’s a legacy brand. It’s like Vogue for the gay community. It has a lot of opportunities to grow and be really exciting. It felt like everything aligned to this moment. I’m hoping to identify my successor at Teen Vogue with Anna. I’m very excited about announcing that. I’m still working on planning the Teen Vogue summit and and making sure everything is buttoned up.”
3. Having Diane von Furstenberg as your grandmother is as cool as you’d expect, according to the person who would know best.
“For me, she’s my grandma. The iconic part comes second. She knows everyone and is involved with a hundred things every single day. She puts so much good energy out there, beyond just fashion. She’s taught me about owning who you are. She’s taught me about confidence. Being the women you want to be is so relevant now, but she preached it a long time ago. She calls me 10 times a day. If I don’t respond to her in two hours because I’m sleeping late, she worries that I’m not OK. Sometimes she texts, but she’s a caller. She’s the nicest and coolest ever.” — Talita von Furstenberg, DvF’s granddaughter
4. Michael Kors has a very busy theater schedule ahead of him.
“We loved Straight White Men. I thought it was fantastic. There’s lots of good stuff opening up. I can’t wait to see Kenneth Lonergan’s new play, The Waverly Gallery. I’m going back to My Fair Lady with Laura Benanti!…A Chorus Line at City Center. It’s going to be a busy theatre fall!”
5. Escada’s new creative director, Niall Sloan, has some strong opinions about Dynasty.
“That’s definitely what I grew up watching. Alexis wore Escada back in the day. I like to extract the glamour of it, but not the characters. The show wasn’t always the best portrayal of women. It wasn’t a sensitive expression of who women can be.”
6. Cher is on Inez and Vinoodh’s bucket list.
“Still haven’t [photographed her]. We still ask everyone. For some reason it hasn’t happened yet. Cher and Barbra!”
7. Paris Hilton lost her phone at Burning Man.
“I didn’t have a phone the whole time. Everyone had service but I lost both of my phones while I was unpacking my thirty suitcases. It got lost under some tutus. I had no phone until I repacked and found it. It was nice to disconnect, but hard. Everything I wore was just epic. I didn’t get to take any pictures. It was mostly sexy catsuits, crystal bras, and tiny leather skirts. It was very Burning Man!”
8. Grace Elizabeth and Larsen Thompson can sit with us.
The two delights attended the Michael Kors x 10 Corso Como dinner to celebrate his Spring show last night, and have the manners and charm that a lot of these “influencers” could take a few lessons from. Make more people like them successful.
9. Cynthia Rowley’s presentation at her HQ on Morton Street had models on roller skates.
Pure joy.
