Everyone knows that Michael Kors is a fan of jet set glamour, so it should come as no surprise that he would find inspiration from his travels. Such is the case with the new special-edition of his classic Whitney bag, which is a celebration of (and takes cues from) the Chinese holiday Qixi.
“Qixi is one of those special holidays where the sentiment — love that endures — can be understood and celebrated wherever you are,” Kors said of the 2000-year-old tradition that is based on a romantic Chinese legend, and is similar to Valentine’s Day.

Featuring two versions (red and black) the bags are adorned with silver hearts and stars. Kors collaborated with actress and brand ambassador Yang Mi on the designs, and cast her (naturally) in the campaign, which features gorgeous shots of the city of Shanghai.
Though Mi has a strong idea of who the Michael Kors woman is (she describes them as “chic, charming, and confident”), when it came to the creative process she put a lot of herself into the concept. “Studs are always a part of my style, so I knew I wanted to use them in these designs,” she said of the bags. “The heart shapes were perfect for symbolizing love this Qixi, while the star shapes were all about adding a little personality and attitude.”

The bags were launched earlier this week with an event in Shanghai, that also marked the opening of a pop-up shop, which will be open to fans in the city until August 19th. Fans abroad needn’t fret — though the Michael Kors x Yang Mi experience is far away, the Whitney bag they created together is available online now.
