(NEW YORK) After months, or really, nearly a year’s worth of anticipation since last year’s delightful fashion circus that is the Met Ball, the big night has come and gone. So, what did everyone wear to this year’s PUNK: Chaos to Couture-themed Costume Institute gala? Without further ado…
First and foremost: Anna Wintour, wearing (shocker!) Chanel, this time in a cap-sleeved floral scheme with pink, since “the color of punk is pink.” And then, there was the caped crusader! Wonder who? Andre Leon Talley, in a joie-filled, exceedingly colorful custom Tom Ford. “I never did punk; I went straight to couture,” recounted ALT. Hamish Bowles did the Tom Ford thing, too, also made to order (obviously). Also from the Vogue klatch, Grace Coddington wore Rochas. In addition to Wintour, Chanel also did up January Jones (in a recent vintage by the maison, dating back four years).
Host extraordinaire Hilary Rhoda picked beaded, oh so Deco (hey, Gatsby!) Wes Gordon as she chatted up the carpet. Gorgeous. Rooney Mara went the Givenchy route, of course, given her Met Ball co-host, Riccardo Tisci. The look? Decidedly a departure from the gothier looks, Dragon Tattoo-ish Tisci has tended to for the actress in the past, instead opting for a white eyelet, zipper-trimmed frock. J’adore the ruffled sleeves. Punk lite, with a hefty dose of pretty! Other Givenchy-ettes of the night: Beyonce, Madonna, Kim Kardashian, and Frank Ocean. Two single-name divas at one table: go, Riccardo, go!
Calvin Klein Collection swathed Katie Holmes in a fluttery white confection, with a rounded halter that she worked on with Francisco Costa. As one of the arguably truest-to-theme sartorial moments of the night, behold Christina Ricci’s plaid strapless Vivienne Westwood Couture. Elettra Wiedemann was in a space cadet-esque Prabal Gurung, with the designer as her date. The dress was mustard, Pepto pink, satin, and tres futuristic. Proenza Schouler outfitted Chloe Sevigny, who paired the lightly slashed frock with a petit turban. Dior did up Jennifer Lawrence (no surprise there), while Anne Hathaway opted for a 21-year-old “vintage” Valentino number.
Renee Zellweger rolled through in brown Prada, long-sleeved and paillette and crystal finished, while Heidi Klum showed up in frothy light gray Marchesa collection. (Linda Evangelista chose Marchesa as well.) Karen Elson donned Julien MacDonald for the big affair (with a big ear cuff!) and Saint Laurent for the afterparty action. The Fanning sisters (Elle and Dakota) opted, unsurprisingly, for Rodarte. Leather ’twas the look for Alicia Keys, done up in a noir Jason Wu with burgundy sequin detailing.
Meanwhile, the house of Carolina Herrera gussied up Emily Blunt and Minka Kelly. Kerry Washington opted for Vera Wang, Greta Gerwig went the way of Saint Laurent. Miley Cyrus got the Marc Jacobs treatment. Is that what Cyrus and her mom were whispering about while watching Jacobs’ Fall ’13 show from the standing room section after slipping in as the runway action began? Also in MJ: his close pal, Sofia Coppola. As for Donna Karan’s lasses of the evening? Hailee Steinfeld and Emmy Rossum both donned her Atelier designs.
Still not satiated? More looks of note: Kate Upton optied for DvF, Girls wunderkind Lena Dunham in Erdem, Leslie Mann in J.Mendel, and Lizzy Tisch in a short-sleeved silver and gold Paco Rabbane number. Tory Burch designs got step-and-repeated by Jessica Alba and Jennifer Goodwin. Theyskens’ Theory dressed Doutzen Kroes, and Kenzo got its hands on Solange Knowles, with a B&W number. NIcki Minaj chose Tommy Hilfiger; besides being Tommy’s date (or, perhaps, as a reward for that), Minaj purportedly got a $37K Rolex out of the eve. Debbie Harry also went with the house of Hilfiger.
On the joillerie front….Harry Winston encrusted Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, Lily Collins, Ashley Greene, Christina Ricci, and Klum, for the occasion. Meanwhile, Kate Beckinsale, Miranda Kerr, Chanel Iman, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Lively, Kardashian, Blunt, Huntington-Whitley, Kelly, and Solange Knowles all donned custom Lorraine Swartz baubles. Bulgari was responsible for the sparkle quotient for Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma Roberts, and Jaime King.
