Lucio Castro is entering his ninth season at his namesake label and showed his Spring 2016 looks yesterday at Skylight with muse Alan Cumming in attendance. He tells The Daily what was behind the collection and where he’ll be escaping to for a holiday soon.
Launched: 2011
Retailers: “Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Ave, Ron Herman, American Rag, Swords & Smith, Anglobal in Tokyo and if you happen to be in Istambul, American Rag Turkey.”
Spring ’16 vibe: “Nollywood, Nigerian Hollywood, which is the second largest film industry in the world. The films usually are updated versions of folk tales and they are very linked to their tribal history, so we also looked at the amazing costumes in Nigeria. Particularly, we loved the way they mix high and low, like a beautifully embroidered silk/cotton top with polyester track suit pants. “
Special materials: “We are using a block printing technique that creates uneven patterns on super fine cottons; and our main print is called “Audience Print” which is the back of different Nigerian people looking at a movie screen. In terms of shapes, we are adding volume to trousers and shorts.”
Summer jam: “I just watched the new Nina Simone documentary so I’ve been listening to “To be Young Gifted and Black” on repeat. I also love the new Sparks/Franz Ferdinand (FFS) album, specially the song “Collaborations Don’t Work”.”
Escape plan: Folegandros in Greece.”
Unusual hobbby: “16mm film animation.”
Male mod muse: “Tao Fernandez Caino“
