Giambattista Valli Fall/Winter 2016

by Kristen Heinzinger

Giambattista Valli’s fall collection in Paris, in a few words, was a lesson in ruffles, pleats, and embroidery. His feminine silhouettes are flattering without being overly saccharine, and his knack for marrying different patterns and textures is divine. Even his more boxy pieces, like the oversized suit jacket, hit the leg at just the right spot, and a bit lower than his usual cocktail hemlines. And that mink striped coat? We’ve certainly seen our fair share of fur this season, but not in the way Valli alternates it with embroidery or crisscrosses it with embellished stripes. For a grand finale, Gigi Hadid closed the show in a sheer high-collared floral-embroidered gown. And if nothing else catches your eye from this collection, see the shoes…Roman-born Valli took the gladiator sandal to new heights, giving it the same peek-a-boo type tease as his cocktail dresses.
