The Academy of Art University will hold its graduate show on September 8, during New York Fashion Week. Ahead of the event, The Daily is highlighting some of the unique talents presenting their MFA collections at the show.
1. MARIANA GOREY
What to expect: A womenswear collection of silk satin-faced organza and cotton canvas pieces in vibrant hues.
Inspirations: The designer’s memories of struggling with dyslexia while studying in France, and the creative approach of painter/sculptor/photographer Cy Twombly.
Worth noting: Gorey also has a degree in art history. Fittingly, the collection is described as a “triumphant ode to artistic expression.”

2. QING GUO
What to expect: A menswear collection that is utilitarian yet bold, balancing functionality and showmanship.
Key themes: Paper lanterns. Guo’s favorite holidays are the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Lantern Festival in China. She also grew up making lanterns with her father.
Unexpected details: All that leather in her collection? It’s vegan!
