Hostility Towards Radhika Jones’ Vanity Fair (Intelligencer
Radhika Jones’ vision for Vanity Fair garnered far more harsh criticism than previously thought — some of which came from within Condé Nast. According to Intelligencer, an unnamed but prominent publicist, who is apparently unaccustomed to diversity, approached a VF editor at a party after Jones’ first issue was published with Lena Waithe on the cover and asked, “What is this, Ebony Fair?” Meanwhile, a Condé salesperson took issue with the pared-down styling. “That could have been an incredibly powerful moment — changing the culture, upending Hollywood. But did she have to wear a T-shirt?,” source said. “It felt like they were completely walking away from fashion.”

Th Intelligencer article is about more than just Vanity Fair. It is a deep dive into the world of Condé. Writer Reeves Wiedeman has crafted a particularly detailed account into the company’s recent shifts, and considers where it will go in the future. Read the whole thing here.
