Jordan Roth and Rosario Dawson Help Break Fundraising Records at Children’s Rights’ Annual Gala
Children’s Rights, the preeminent voice for children harmed by the nation’s immigration, healthcare, and child welfare systems, hosted its 14th annual Benefit & Inspiration Awards Gala at the Mandarin Oriental on Monday, raising over $1.6 million, a record. Jordan Roth served as the night’s emcee, helping to present awards to Vincent Mai, F. William McNabb, and Lexie Pèrez-Grüber for their work in service of children.
Pèrez-Gruber, who entered the foster system as a teenager, spoke about her own harrowing experience in foster care and her work advocating for the passage of the Family First Act in Washington, a comprehensive federal child welfare reform law.
“Today the need has never been more urgent,” said Sandy Santana, Executive Director of Children’s Rights. “Government policies are putting children at risk in our nation’s immigration, healthcare, and child welfare systems, while the opioid epidemic is driving more children into an already overburdened foster care system. In response, we have strengthened our work to protect the rights of children, and we are excited to honor remarkable people who have made significant contributions to improving their lives.”
Rosario Dawson spoke about her personal experience adopting her daughter, Lola, from foster care at the age of 11. “I always knew I wanted to be a mother,” she said. “When I was five years old, I told my mom I wasn’t sure if I would have kids, but I would adopt and I would adopt older.”
The night also included a very special appearance by Karli, a six-and-a-half year old muppet from Sesame Street. Karli is in foster care and is the face of Sesame Workshop’s new foster care initiative. “Too many children, through no fault of their own, do not have a stable home with adults who care, adequate healthcare, or access to education,” said Mai, a longtime chairman of the board at the Sesame Workshop. “Children’s Rights exists to change that. In a world where it feels like all we’re doing is putting Band-Aids on problems, Children’s Rights is bringing about tangible, structural change on an enormous scale and in the process transforming the lives of children.”

Lafayette 148 Fêtes its New Boutique & Photography Exhibit With Cocktails
Contemporary women’s brand Lafayette 148 has a devastatingly chic new location at 956 Madison Avenue. Adding to the allure of the space, the boutique is home to a new photography exhibit by Patrick McMullan, titled Glamour, Grit & Grace: Portraits of Iconic New York Women. McMullan himself was in attendance, as were Kelly Rutherford, Hannah Bronfman, Sophie Elgort, and Fern Mallis, among others.
The show, which will be on view through January 1, 2020, features a curation of black and white photographs showcasing trailblazing New York women captured by McMullan over his more than 30-year career, all selected from his vast archives. It’s a who’s who of glamorous New Yorkers, including the likes of Glenn Close, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Debbie Harry, Iman, Grace Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Fran Lebowitz, Liza Minnelli, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rosie Perez, Christy Turlington, and Michelle Williams, among others, stretching from the 1980s to today.
“I’ve made it my work documenting the city, it’s people and it’s celebrations,” says McMullan. “It’s a genuine thrill going back through the archives, seeing my work of these images of exciting, powerful and glamorous women in NYC. Most good photographs are a matter of trust and engagement that we had with each other. It’s always great to look back at the people and places that I have been and see the women that I have met and known.”
But Lafayette 148 isn’t just putting up these images as decoration — it’s actually a charitable venture. All of the photographs are being auctioned off to benefit Bring Change to Mind, a non-profit devoted to ending the stigma around mental illness, founded by Glenn Close. From December 3rd to the 17th, Charitybuzz will auction the exhibition’s portraits, with 100% of proceeds benefitting Bring Change to Mind.
“This evening brings together so much of what we stand for — we’re a New York brand, of course, but we’re also led by women for women,” says Liz Fraser, president of Lafayette 148. “These women capture the New York spirit we celebrate — resilience, strength, confidence and beauty. And who could be more New York than Patrick McMullan? He’s been synonymous with this city for more than three decades. So, it’s a wonderful way to celebrate our new Madison store and this exciting next chapter in our New York journey.”

The Bronx Museum of the Arts’ BxMA Ball
The Bronx Museum of the Arts held the first BxMA Ball, a lively annual art and music-focused fundraiser at the museum. The evening celebrated queer and street culture, and honored art power couple Mickalene Thomas and Bronx native Racquel Chevremont. This was the first fundraiser held at the Bronx Museum in ten years, emphasizing a major homecoming under the leadership of Executive Director Deborah Cullen. The BxMA Ball supports the museum in its mission to make art accessible to all through its free admission policy, internationally recognized exhibitions, and extensive arts education programs that empower youth in the borough.
As the evening commenced, guests from the worlds of art, fashion, business, and philanthropy arrived for a seated dinner co-chaired by BxMA trustee and artist Angel Otero and fashion visionary Jerome LaMaar. Guests enjoyed cocktails by Wandering Barman, an exceptional three-course meal curated by Bronx-based creative collective Ghetto Gastro, and a special performance by musician and social activist TK Wonder.
