Alexander Wang’s Collection for Uniqlo Is Finally Here

by Aria Darcella

Only Alexander Wang could cause a stir over a collection of comfy, warm innerwear items. Yesterday to celebrate their new collaboration the designer and Uniqlo held an interactive event set in a winter wonderland. A chilled anteroom featured an ice sculpture, and snow cones (among other chilly items) that press could photograph before heading in to hear Wang discuss his new HEATTECH collection. It seemed a fitting way to toast a line made to keep you warm in cold weather. It was also a great way to make note of the designer’s first collaboration with the retailer in 10 years. So what took so long for round two?

“I really had so much respect for the Uniqlo brand,” Wang said. “But I knew that if we were to do something together… it had to break down boundaries, it had to push the conversation forward. I didn’t want to just do something that you wouldn’t create impact.”

The result is a 16-piece collection (10 women’s items, six men’s) of innerwear items using Uniqlo’s innovative HEATTECH fabric. It’s designed to look sporty and futuristic, but with some very subtle ’80s references. Being a Wang collection there is also a lot of black involved, but he threw in some neon green to keep things au current.

Wang himself lists the bodysuits among his favorite pieces. “I love the idea that there’s so much versatility in how to wear them again, whether you’re wearing them as innerwear or by themselves,” he explained. “We wanted to make enough opaqueness that if you wanted to wear it on it’s own it’s fine, but enough versatility that if I was wearing it underneath [something], it wouldn’t obstruct [the look].”

Honestly, the collection feels made to be lived in. The bodysuits and tank tops are incredibly soft, while the leggings are indeed as warm as advertised, despite how lightweight they are. The collection hits select New York stores November 8, and all stores November 9. See all the womenswear pieces for yourself, below:
