This just in: Peter Do is exiting Helmut Lang. The designer shared the news in a press statement on Tuesday, marking a surprise departure—particularly as he’s only been the brand’s creative director for just under two years.
“I want to express my gratitude to mu Helmut Lang team, who have been integral in supporting my vision,” Do said. “It’s been an incredible journey to be tasked to carry on the legacy of Helmut Lang. I would like to give special thanks to Kazumi [Yanai] for this opportunity of a lifetime and experience that I will never forget.”
Do’s reasoning for his exit was not revealed, though Helmut Lang’s Pre-Fall 2025 line will be his final collection for the brand. Previously, Do joined Helmut Lang in 2023. His debut collection for the brand hit the runway for New York Fashion Week’s Spring 2024 season. While embracing Lang’s signature minimalism, Do also brought a dash of contemporary edge seen at his own namesake label, which grew in popularity in the early 2020’s.
Interestingly enough, Do’s Helmut Lang exit came within 24 hours of Phillip Lim‘s exit announcement from 3.1 Phillip Lim. The pair’s dual departures from their creative director roles are the latest in fashion’s whirlwind “musical chairs” of designer appointments in 2024. In the last several months, new creative director hires and departures have affected Celine, Valentino, Givenchy, Tom Ford, Alberta Ferretti, Missoni, Blumarine, and Calvin Klein Collection. Meanwhile, Chanel—arguably fashion’s most-coveted job—has yet to name a new creative director after Virginie Viard’s surprise exit in June. Wherever Do lands next is anyone’s guess—but with a cult-favorite status and loyal following, it’s certain his next steps will mark an exciting new chapter.
