Michelle! Emma! Kristen! 16 of the Best Looks from the 2017 SAG Awards

by Sydney Sadick

Hollywood’s glitterati hit the red carpet last night to honor the best achievements in film and television performances at the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Gucci, Christian Dior, Elie Saab and more made an appearance, but this year, the actors took more risks than ever, including cutting-edge silhouettes, futuristic patterns and textures, a play on gothic romance (see Claire Foy and Emma Stone), and sequins galore. In no particular order, here’s who made the cut…

Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton
The Louis Vuitton brand ambassador had a major moment last night in an eye-catching metallic sequined striped gown from the French fashion house. Because of her gown’s sequined neck choker detail, her choice of jewelry was limited—just a cocktail ring. Slay Michelle, slay!

Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra
So far, Evan Rachel Wood is steering clear from dresses and is trademarking pantsuit dressing this red carpet season. TBH: We are very much okay with that. The actress, who was nominated along with her fellow Westworld castmates for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, chose to wear Altuzarra again in a follow up to her Golden Globes’ tux by the designer. This time she showed up in another perfectly tailored number: a midnight blue, velvet incarnation, paired with Tiffany studded earrings and tanzanite rings.

Thandie Newton in Schiaparelli Couture
‘Twas a whimsical, statement-making number, indeed, thanks to the help of stylist Erin Walsh. The actress shimmered in a Schiaparelli Couture ankle-length dress with golden sequins and embroideries of horses and birds, an asymmetrical collar, and one-shouldered sleeve that brought some edge to the feminine silhouette.

Claire Foy in Valentino
Last night was all smiles for Claire Foy! She nabbed Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series for The Crown, and she was a winner on the fashion front, too. The star went for an edgy-meets-romantic sheer number by Valentino that came embellished with white flowers and a ladylike collar.

Nicole Kidman in Gucci
Arguably the most controversial look of the night, the Aussie stole our hearts with a green sequined Gucci dress with a plunging neckline and toucan embellishments on the shoulders. The look was full of drama. She had a moment, whether you were feeling her, or not.

Natalie Portman in Dior
The Jackie actress and mom-to-be wowed in a Dior haute couture piece that feature a simple silhouette and dramatic sleeves. She kept the rest of her look equally classic with drop earrings and her hair pulled back. She looked as elegant as ever.

Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen
All eyes on Emma! The actress turned up the sexy, dark, and haute quotients last night in a black floral Alexander McQueen gown that was part dress, part lingerie—just look at that corset top!—showcasing the beautiful and unique construction. Emma always brings out the unexpected—there’s no way to predict what she’ll wear next.

Maisie Williams in a pink silk gown
Mystery gown alert! Where is the VIP fashion publicist for this gown when they are needed? No one seemed to know who Maisie was wearing. Regardless, the Game of Thrones starlet looked effortlessly chic in the pink silk gown—a red-carpet version of a slip dress. The simplicity of the retro look paired with her raven locks and deep purple lip was a winning combination for the 19-year-old.

Michelle Dockery in Elie Saab
Brava, Michelle! The actress stunned in stripes last night in an eye-catching Elie Saab SS17 gown that’s bold, punchy, bright, and above all, refreshing. It showed off her envious figure—just look at those shoulders and arms—and her flawless porcelain skin.

Kirsten Dunst in Dior
Another belle stunned in white Dior last night: Kirsten Dunst, who recently got engaged to partner Jesse Plemons. The crystal-embellished straps, sparkling white palette, and lingerie-inspired bustier neckline (j’adore, j’adore, j’adore!) of the Dior gown was topped off with layers of diamond necklaces, her beachy waves, and a bold red lip.

Millie Bobby Brown in custom Emporio Armani
Keep your eyes out for Millie Bobby Brown! She’s only 12, and the actress is already becoming a red carpet staple for top designers to dress. The sleeveless custom red-belted Emporio Armani gown was youthful and elegant. P.S. did you notice her formally close-cropped ‘do for Stranger Things is finally growing out?

Also, shout-out to another Stranger Things star, Caleb McLaughlin, who was looking dapper in a bespoke tux by Bookatailor for McLaughlin. The young actor has been rocking some seriously stylin’ suits this awards season.

Samantha Isler in Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini
The cast of Captain Fantastic was a big one, but Samantha Isler stood out in a brightly colored gown with a Victorian twist. The dress matured the 18-year-old while still feeling fresh. It wasn’t an all-around favorite for everyone, but it fit Isler impeccably and stood out as one of the braver fashion looks of the evening (although Kidman’s bold emerald sequined ensemble still takes the cake).

Amanda Peet in Michael Kors Collection
There wasn’t a ton of black on this year’s red carpet, but of those who did go that route, one actress in particular had a show-stopping moment: Amanda Peet in a Michael Kors Collection crepe-sablé gown with floral-sequined embroidery. The detailing was enough to take a rather simple dress to next-level status, making her a favorite of the night.

Sarah Paulson in Vera Wang
Sarah Paulson’s Vera Wang gown was certainly one of the safest choices, but her effortless, timeless style makes her an instant red carpet favorite. Earlier in the evening, she topped off the dress with a chic cropped white cape blazer, which added some drama to the classic look.

Yara Shahidi in Naeem Khaan
Black-ish star Yara Shahidi is not one to shy away! The actress, 16, caught our attention in a technicolor Naeem Khaan sleeveless, sequin-embellished gown that’s playful, colorful, girly, and edgy all at once. Talk about a wow factor!
