Studio 54! Patti Hansen! Barry Manilow! Michael Kors Collection for Fall 2019 was a disco dream, and an ode to 1970s New York — an era in which the art, fashion, and party scenes were alive and sparkling. Decadence and glamour abounded and the show ended with a surprise performance by Manilow, which got the models dancing and fashionistas in the audience smiling.

Bianca Jagger and New York hot-spots like the Roseland and the Russian Tea Room were among the influences for this season, drawing from specific style references like women’s tuxedos, platform shoes, and feathers and fur (both faux). Glittering bias-cut dresses brought the disco flare, while long blazers paired with hot pants brought some sexiness to the proceedings.

“That was such a positive show,” Karen Elson told The Daily backstage after taking the runway. “It felt like Bugsy Malone meets a modern day girl and Bob Fossee and show tunes and all things that are just beautiful and upbeat.” Bob Fossee was indeed one of Kors’ inspirations, as were Alvin Ailey and Mikhail Baryshnikov. As such, there were several references to dancewear in the show, from leg warmers to ballet-style wraps and bodysuits.

For the grande finale — not including Manilow, of course — iconic ’70s supermodel Patti Hansen took to the runway, proving that glamour knows no age limit.
