Kenzo & H&M’s Show Couldn’t Have Been More Fun

by Eddie Roche

Few can beat the production H&M pulls off every year to launch its designer collaborations. Balmain brought back the Backstreet Boys, Prince performed for Versace with a little help from Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott got her freak on for Alexander Wang, and last night, it was Kenzo’s turn to wow us, and did they ever.

Jean-Paul Goude directed an high-energy spectacle at Pier 36 in Manhattan, where insiders got a first look at Humberto Leon and Carol Lim’s collection with H&M, which hits stores November 3. A remix of Sam Spiegel’s “Express Yourself” played on loop throughout the entire runway show performance as a relatively unknown group of dancers modeling the designs skipped, danced, and, as the song goes, expressed themselves with on-point choreography by Ryan Heffington. The festivities didn’t stop there…a marching band, beatboxers, whistlers, and four-string quartets performed as well. It was a feast for the ears and eyes. Front rowers included Sienna Miller, Iman, Elizabeth Olsen, Lupita Nyongo’o, Chloe Sevigny, Bethann Hardison, Rosario Dawson, and Joe Jonas, who all jumped to their feet at the finale and joined the party as the runway turned into a dance floor. As the night carried on, some shopped at the on-site pop-up store, others watched a surprise performance by Ice Cube, and others snuck out to catch the presidential debate (guilty!) “It was a show we will never forget,” Lim and Leon said after. We can’t disagree.
