For the Kate Spade New York Fall 2019 collection, creative director Nicola Glass focused on the new house codes she introduced for Spring while still keeping the brand’s core DNA in mind. Staying true to the brand’s promise of optimistic femininity the collection featured fluid silhouettes, a bold use of color, and fresh takes on novelty.
Notable attendees included Sadie Sink, Julia Garner, KiKi Layne, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Angela Sarafyan, Julia Jones, and Leandra Medine.
The Daily caught up with Glass backstage after the show.
It’s your second season. Was it easier?
It was less nerve-wracking! I probably slept last night and I didn’t really before my first season. This time I knew what to expect. I feel a little more relaxed this time.
Let’s talk about the collection!
It’s this idea of soft glamour. I was inspired by the idea of a woman’s closet and the thought of where clothes end up rather than where they originated. I envisioned women who are looking for clothes that are spirited, feminine and fundamentally effortless. There’s a soft glamour to this collection… an easy fluidity. As a brand we’re always known for colors, but I wanted to continue exploring it in more unexpected ways. I wanted lots of vibrant colors!
Love your Irish accent! Where are you from?
Just outside of a little village outside of Belfast.
Do people have trouble understanding your accent?
Sometimes they do. I left when I was 18 years-old, but I’ve still held on to my accents but there are certain words… There are some words I get teased for like “murrer,” which is mirror.
If you’re homesick for Ireland, do you go anywhere in New York to remind you of your roots?
You should ask me what food I should eat! It’s always mashed potatoes. I used to get teased because I would always be happy if there were three types of potatoes at a meal. Give me some french fries, a mashed potato, and a baked potato.
You’re my kinda girl!
Comfort food!
