Haute Couture Spring 2017: Schiaparelli

by Paige Reddinger

It wouldn’t be Schiaparelli without a nod to founder Elsa Schiaparelli’s iconic motifs, from the lobster dress (done this season on a one-shouldered beige gown) to the lock (a keyhole was featured on a Schiaparelli pink strapless dress and on the pockets of a caped white gown). Design director Bertrand Guyon also took inspiration from photographer Guy Bourdin, whose photograph of two caviar beaded faces served as the inspo for a jacket, while the ’70s silhouettes echoed the free-flowing femininity of the era that was Bourdin’s heyday. Chinoiserie was another theme and one of the best looks was a gown inspired by Chinese artist Ah Xian’Human human—Lotus. Another winner? A simple lipstick red blouse paired with a skirt made of paneled silk tie twill that somehow felt like a breath of fresh air.
