Best of Resort 2017: Milly, Tibi, See by Chloé

by Paige Reddinger

Label: Milly

Inspiration: “I was inspired by Ellsworth Kelly this season,” said Michelle Smith, who was in the midst of shooting her Resort 2017 collection at Sandbox Studios on Hudson Street when we caught up with her. “This is the most fun season to design. You have the challenge of trying to create pieces that work in all kinds of climates.”

Highlights: Bold graphic prints on standout outerwear, voluminous dresses, and skirts, plus a must-have pair of black bell-bottom pants.

Label: Tibi

Inspiration: “I always start with the color palette when I begin designing my collections,” said Amy Smilovic. “Sometimes it might just be about whether or not something’s completely saturated or whether it’s sharp or in focus or a whole new color story like this ’50s palette. I was inspired by a series of photographs of Eileen Ford.”

Highlights: Chic styling, like corsets layered over cashmere sweaters, paired with a brightly colored pair of wide-leg pants and ultra-chic trench coats with oversize silver buttons, which, when left undone at the shoulder or up the back can add just the right dose of sex appeal. Plus, the ultimate pair of cerulean blue leather trousers and a chic feline print lifted from the brand’s archives and reinvented on a cinched-waist A-line linen dress. You can never go wrong with Tibi’s footwear either.

Label: See by Chloé

Inspiration: Botanical photography, futurist curvilinear architecture, and European and Asian influences combined for an eccentric urban hipster effect.

Highlights: Exaggerated culottes, Japanese denim, chic oversize belts, and, of course, the brand’s signature romantic gowns.
