Barneys New York Breaks Down the Biggest Trends (and Definite Don’ts) for Spring 2020

by Charles Manning

It will be months still before the Spring 2020 collections hit stores, but it’s never too soon to get a jump on the latest trends. Here, Barneys New York’s executive vice president and merchandising manager, women’s, Jay Bell, breaks down the biggest trends of the coming season.

What are the biggest trends to come out of the Spring 2020 shows?
The familiar denim styles at Saint Laurent, Givenchy, and Celine looked fresh, elevated, and chic. I also responded to the voluminous dresses, which exuded a free-spirited, confident elegance.

Voluminous dresses can be tricky. Who did them best?
There were so many stunning dresses, often with free-flowing volumes, but the best were from Balenciaga, Givenchy, Victoria Beckham, Proenza, Valentino, Jil Sander, The Row.

What trends are on the outs and why?
Overly adorned street-style – especially for day – looks dated; chic, considered style is a welcome reprieve.

What are the must-have pieces?
Anything from Bottega, tailoring from Celine, boots from Saint Laurent, leather shorts, crisp white shirts, a luxurious bag from Mètier London.

What is the most surprising trend of the season and why?
Monochrome dressing looks cool and confident – all-khaki, shades of navy, or rusts and reds: it all works when worn head-to-toe.
