7 Beauty Trends that Swept The Golden Globes Red Carpet

by Kristen Heinzinger

With the Golden Globes, awards season has officially arrived, and with it a preview of this year’s reigning beauty trends. It looks like the no-makeup makeup look is here to stay, chéries, save for a few daring lip colors and the smokey eye. But as far as tresses go, there was plenty to ogle. Below, the trends that kicked off the season.

Face-framing crops — MICHELLE WILLIAMS, MILLIE BOBBY BROWN, EVAN RACHEL WOOD
Not everyone can pull off a face-framing pixie-type cut, but leave it to Michelle Williams, Millie Bobby Brown, and Evan Rachel Wood to dominate the look. Paired with minimal makeup, the simple ‘dos were ultra chic, particularly the slicked-back styling on Williams and Brown. Wood has been sporting an undercut for a few years now, but last night’s style gave us major David Bowie vibes. Do with that what you will.

Blackberry Lips — PRIYANKA CHOPRA and KERRY WASHINGTON
A bold lip done right! Priyanka Chopra and Kerry Washington each found their most complimentary shade of deep blackberry lipstick. And pouts like those are worth calling attention to! Paired with sleek locks and golden-hued dresses, it was a home run.

The Sexy Lob — EMILY RATAJKOWSKI and KRISTEN BELL
The lob has certainly had its moment, but celebs continue to opt for the easy-breezy style, and we can’t ignore when it’s done right. Emily Ratajkowski and Kristen Bell both wore their shoulder-gracing hair in loose waves with major body. (Tip: Ratajkowski’s was a faux bob, thanks to the styling genius of Christian Wood.) As far as makeup, both the actresses opted for a smoky eye and nude-colored lips, hopping on the no-makeup-makeup trend everyone can’t seem to get enough of.

Long Pin-Straight Strands — NAOMI CAMPBELL and AMY ADAMS
Hello, ’90s. Naomi Campbell and Amy Adams both have hair for days (likely partially owed to a great set of extensions), and last night they revived the tried-and-true pin-straight look and center part. We’ll certainly be seeing more of this simple (and fairly hassle-free) look in 2017.

The Half-Updo — NICOLE KIDMAN and EMMA STONE
Half-up styles never cease to make an appearance on a red carpet, but the modern twist Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone put on the classic is worth calling out. Kidman’s mermaid-wave ‘do had pieces invisibly tucked into the back. Stone wore a simpler version of the style, with a few chunky strands in the front and the rest pulled back and rolled at the nape of her neck.

Oversized Buns — LILY COLLINS and JANELLE MONAE
Everything about Lily Collins’ red carpet look last night was something to behold, including her oversized bun, which was seemingly held in place with one long braid. Her red lip and dusty pink eye shadow topped it off. Likewise, Janelle Monae opted for a larger than life updo, and the adornments her hairstylist Nikki Nelms has been a fan of lately made an appearance, this time in the form of miniature pearls. Janelle is killing it in the beauty department.

Princess Leia Braids — JESSICA CHASTAIN and SARAH JESSICA PARKER
Braided buns reminiscent of Princess Leia’s signature style popped up more than a few times last night. Renato Campora for Moroccanoil created a low, singular braided bun for Jessica Chastain, while Sarah Jessica Parker took the look to the extreme with a voluminous braided crown we didn’t totally j’adore, but was admirable for its approach. We’re sure we’ll see a riff on this style more than once this awards season.
