A trifecta of leading women’s brands—Good Housekeeping, Woman’s Day, and L’Oréal Paris—got together yesterday at Hearst Tower. The occasion? The 50 Over 50 luncheon, which honored 50 successful and inspirational women over the age of 50. A panel including Kyra Sedgwick, Whoopi Goldberg, and Cynthia Rowley, along with honorees Fern Mallis and Karen LeFrak, spearheaded discussions about things like what they wish they could tell their younger selves and what they’ve accomplished at 50-plus that they never would have attempted when they were younger. Below, we’ve rounded up the highlights!
“I’ve always had a big mouth, but now I’m actually allowed to have a big mouth.” —Kyra Sedgwick
“Life is short. If you want to make a change, try it. There’s nothing wrong with a fail. You’re not going to be able to do everything, but you can try everything.” —Whoopi Goldberg
“On a typical day, I’m up by 5 a.m. and I sneak out of bed so I don’t wake my husband. I work from 5 – 7 a.m. composing with earphones. I resume composing until about 11 a.m., and then I have time for the rest of the day.” —Honoree and philanthropist Karen LeFrak
“My advice that I give to young people and students is to be nice. Everybody’s competing against somebody and there’s a lot of talent out there. At the end of the day people really want to work with people who are nice. They want to give a quote to somebody who is nice, they’ll place an order with somebody that’s nice.” —Fern Mallis
“My true secret [to staying young] is denial! [Laughs] I’m sure people say yoga or something, but in my case, denial is the key…and every year is always fun.” —Cynthia Rowley
