Editor’s Pick: Stella McCartney’s Vegetarian Leather Stan Smiths

by Charles Manning
What: The first ever vegetarian leather Stan Smith sneaker, created by Stella McCartney in collaboration with Adidas. It features McCartney’s portrait and autograph on the left tongue (Stan Smith is on the right), the designer’s branding and signature burgundy and blue stripe on the heels, and oh-so-cute star-shaped punches in three stripes down both sides. Who: Stella McCartney founded her namesake fashion label in partnership with Kering in 2001, following a highly successful stint as the head designer at French fashion house Chloé. In 2005, McCartney debuted her first collaboration with Adidas, pioneering the fashion activewear movement and launching a fruitful partnership with the sportswear giant that continues to this day. As a lifelong vegetarian, McCartney doesn’t use any leather or fur in her designs. Her brand is committed to ethical values, and believes the company is responsible for the resources it uses and the impact it has on the environment. It is therefore constantly exploring innovative ways to become more sustainable, from designing to store practices and product manufacturing. Why: The Stan Smith is the gold standard for white sneakers and this update is just different enough to make it feel special without sacrificing the minimal aesthetic that makes the shoe so perfect to begin with. When: The release will coincide with Stella McCartney’s birthday week, with pre-orders starting on September 5, and the official store drop happening worldwide on September 10 — McCartney’s birthday being on September 13. Where: Stellamccartney.com, Stella McCartney stores, and luxury retailers like Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Net-A-Porter, and Saks Fifth Avenue How (much): $325 Subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on Facebook to stay up to date on all the latest fashion news and juicy industry gossip.
