Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2016

by Kristen Heinzinger

Italia played muse for Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s Spring ’16 collection, which played off the beauty of the designers’ homeland, but with an unexpected angle. The collection was a tasteful display of the country’s attractions in the eyes of a tourist. Prints of landmarks, gondolas, flowers, phrases like “Italia is Love,” and even “Rome” with a gilded, embroidered silhouette of the Pantheon appeared in cheerful colors, prints, and modern shapes. Some mods adorned traditional Italian silk headscarves, while others wore flower crowns; a series of sandals were decorated with oversized blossoms; and shades were serio

usly bedazzled. Beauty is, after all, in the eye of the beholder, non? The designers would likely agree, as they had mods make the traditional sashay down the catwalk, but also tasked them with snapping selfies, which were projected onto a screen during the show. The flamboyant, colorful side of Italian culture was celebrated rather than concealed, to which we say, bellissimo!
