The 2019 Fashion Los Angeles Awards turned out to be a great source of fashion trivia, mostly thanks to LOVE editor Katie Grand. When presenting Adriana Lima with the the Fashion Icon award, the editor regaled the audience with the story of the time she oh-so-casually threw away Lima’s diamond belly-button jewelry — a gift from Lenny Kravitz.
“One of the first things we did [together] was shoot with Glen Luchford for Harper’s Bazaar US,” said Grand. “It was a big deal for me. I had never worked for Bazaar before. [Adriana] took her belly button piercing out — it was a big diamond that Lenny Kravitz had given to her. We were all really impressed. She wrapped it in some tissue paper and we were like, ‘Yeah, we’ll definitely take care of it.’ And we threw it away.”

The point of the story — other than being pretty funny — was to highlight how charming and easygoing Lima is. The model kept her cool upon learning of the accident, and helped the team dig through the trash to find the lost gem. “Thank god we found the diamond,” Grand concluded.
The women have been friends ever since, with Grand booking Lima for jobs even when the model felt down on herself. “There were times I struggled in my work, where I did not feel confident enough, beautiful enough, and Katie still chose me to do a campaign,” Lima said. “This woman is so talented. She has a wonderful heart, truly.”
Later in the evening, Grand accepted an award of her own for Creatives of the Year, which she shared with Derek Blasberg for their work on #MovingLove. She had one more story up her sleeve: that her magazine is actually named after Courtney Love. The more you know!
