On Thursday eve, Barneys created an idyllic, luxe music festival-esque scene to toast Isabel Marant, replete with lights strung from the ceiling, green plants and vibrant blossoms strewn about, and bites of avocado toast and cones of French fries to nibble on. The designer was on hand for the celebration, and we snagged a quick chat…
How did your relationship with Barneys get started?
Barneys was one of my first American [retail] customers and we’ve been working together since 1996.
What’s the story behind your line getting picked up here?
It was very funny, because the first time I came to New York to do a [trade] fair, Barneys noticed me straight away, but they didn’t place any orders. They came to Paris not long after and ordered one of my first collections. From then on, it’s been a lasting relationship and I’m super pleased with it.
Any other favorite NYC shopping destinations?
I’m always coming to Barneys, and I’m not just saying that because they’re throwing me a party. It’s true! I love their shop out in L.A., too. They just have such a good selection, a good atmosphere, and a way of finding a bit of something for everyone. Sometimes I even feel like I want to buy things here that I wouldn’t go for in Paris.
