Sandy Oh on the New Indigo Capsule Collection by AG

by Sydney Sadick

For Fall 2016, AG—the luxe denim and lifestyle brand—is launching the Indigo Capsule Collection by AG, a new range of exclusively yarn-dyed indigo knitwear for women and men, as well as a selection of unisex styles. The brand kicked off the capsule with a cocktail reception at Saks with collection designer Sandy Oh, who broke down what we can expect from the brand’s latest range.

What triggered the Indigo Capsule Collection?
I was first drawn to the idea of designing this capsule from the unusual shapes being created by different knit fabrics. We saw the opportunity to take the DNA of AG, being that we are experts when it comes to denim and denim wash, and apply this knowledge to creating an elevated lifestyle collection with interesting modern silhouettes using beautiful indigo knit fabrics.

Why did you think there was a market for it?
The fashion industry is evolving and moving toward genderless and seasonless styling, and this collection offers versatile pieces to build a wardrobe that is more fluid.

Where did you look for inspiration?
Designed to offer the aesthetic and styling of a woven collection created entirely from knit fabrics, I was very inspired by the art of tailoring, in particular the Japanese and European designs like that of Yohji Yamamto, Issey Miyaki, Junya Watanabe, Céline, and even Comme des Garçons.

What types of pieces will we find?
The collection offers an array of versatile pieces for men and women that feature sophisticated silhouettes and interesting structures by using different knit fabrications and tailoring details to create unique shapes and volumes. For example, the compact knit fabrications combined with the seaming in the elbows makes the Nona sweatshirt a very special piece that has both structure and an already lived-in quality. Similarly, the ‘Hexa Pri’ offers a more structured, tailored pant due to the woven characteristics the compact knit takes on as a result of the unique fabrication and pleating down the center front to create additional volume.

Layering seems to be a significant element of this collection.
Definitely; designed to be layered, the collection features a monochromatic color palette, unexpected silhouettes, and interesting textures to allow the wearer to mix and match with ease as well as pair back pieces to classic denim styles for a more casual look.

Is this the first time you’ve experimented with unisex pieces?
With this collection, we wanted to do something a bit out of our norm that would challenge our current customers with forward, fresh, and new design ideas, which are moving forward in our fashion industry. The genderless styles, such as the ‘Dodeca’ coat, are just one element that makes this collection new and exciting for our brand and our customers.
