Tomo Koizumi’s Debut Just Won NYFW
Color! Volume! Supermodels! Last night, Tomo Koizumi made a lavish debut at New York Fashion Week, and it’s all thanks to Instagram. Designer Giles Deacon discovered Koizumi on the app a few months ago, and sent his work to editor Katie Grand, who immediately borrowed pieces for LOVE magazine. “Tomo didn’t know what to do with the clothes so he said to just keep them in our office,” Grand told The Daily. “He started posting some more extravagant pieces like the look that Gwen [Gwendoline Christie] wore in the show. I texted him and said, Take that picture down! We’re going to do a show!

With a little help from Marc Jacobs (who hosted the show at his Madison Avenue boutique) and some major models — including Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Karen Elson, and Rowan Blanchard — the show was a massive hit. “It was unbelievable,” Koizumi said after it ended. “I had never done a fashion show. I was nervous. Katie is so nice. I was trying my best, and I think I did my best.” You did amazing, sweetie!

Details Emerge In Philip Green’s Workplace Harassment Scandal (The Guardian)
Last October, news broke that Philip Green, chairman of Arcadia Group — the retail conglomerate that owns Topshop — was at the center of a #MeToo abuse story. At the time, details were vague because Green had filed an injunction against The Telegraph, the newspaper investigating the story, stopping it from publishing what it discovered. That injunction has since been lifted and Green has been accused of racism, mocking a black employee’s dreadlocks and telling him “everyone else is firing guns and you’re still throwing spears in the jungle.” Additionally, Green is accused of “groping female employees and of being physically aggressive and abusive” to staff members, including an incident in which he smashed an employee’s phone.

Old-World Romance Reigns at Brock Collection
Husband-and-wife design duo Laura Vassar Brock and Kristopher Brock have an easily identifying aesthetic: romantic. The brand is known to draw from historical references, usually from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, both in silhouette and in fabrications — lots of lace, silk, and small-print floral patterns. This season showed more of what fans have come to expect, albeit with a slightly more stoic twist. Initial looks had a somber color palate with heavier materials like wool and heavy cotton, but by the end of the show the looks veered back towards the soft pinks and flowers the line is known for.

Nina Garcia Reveals Plans to Get a Preventative Double Mastectomy (Elle)
Nina Garcia is not attending fashion week this season. She is at home recovering from a preventative double mastectomy. The editor revealed the news in a personal essay, explaining the long road that lead to her decision. “Because of a family history, I decided to get genetic testing to check for mutations to the BRCA genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2), which increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer,” she wrote. “To my surprise, I received an envelope containing the results, stating that I did in fact have a mutation and was at high risk for breast cancer.”

Chromat Brings Diversity and Recycling to the Runway
New York Fashion Week has been improving its runway diversity season after season, thanks in part to designer Becca McCharen-Tran’s casting for Chromat. The swim and bodywear brand is consistently presented on a variety of women. The latest collection — featuring lots bright yellow and metallics — brought a new issue to Chromat’s runway: the environment. McCharen-Tran, who recently moved to Miami, had climate change in mind while designing and the resulting pieces were crafted out of recycled materials and dead stock.
