Nicole Kidman Goes Country for Love Magazine in a Shoot by Carin Backoff

by Paige Reddinger

Nicole Kidman shows off her country side in cowboy hats, chaps, and an ultra sexy all-American swimsuit that shows off her impeccable figure in the new issue of Katie Grand’s Love magazine. The cover story, which was shot by photographer Carin Backoff and styled by Sally Lyndley, shows off Kidman in unexpected laid-back attire. Despite the fact that Kidman lives in Nashville with her country singer husband Keith Urban, we never could quite see her as the cowgirl type until now! ‘That’s crazy what we did” said Kidman of the experience in a press statement. “Little denim shorts, right? I thought about that afterwards. I was like, what was I doing? I lost my mind!”

The new issue is all about “easy hedonism” and the idea that you might be dressed for any occasion from dawn ’til dusk. Grand’s idea for the issue came from her days working in the Miu Miu studio on the Fall/Winter 2017 collection, where she noticed the staff was dressed not only for work but for a night out. “‘I happened to be wearing a pink sequin archive Marc Jacobs gown. Three of the thirtysomething design team also turned up to work that day in pretty much full sparkly evening attire – but in that effortless way, like they might just have picked it up off the floor,” said Grand in a press statement. “It reminded me of being in New York in the early 2000s with Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier, when after prepping shows we’d go out all night to Don Browns, Bungalow 8 and Beatrice Inn, and then go straight in to work the next morning. We’d wear glamorous evening attire whatever the time of day just in case such an eventuality should present itself: work, party, work again, looking dazzling throughout. I coined the phrase “disco to desk” to sum up this approach to dressing, and that was the brief that went out when commissioning stories for this issue.”

Backoff also shot a feature with Kendall Jenner, Daphne Groeneveld, Georgia Fowler, and Slick Woods walking along the West Side Highway at dawn after a night out on the town.

In a playful take on the 24-hour party scene, The Muppets model Miu Miu’s new season of clothing (specially tailored) for Love, with guests stars like Blake Lively, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Animal, Sam Eagle, the Swedish Chef, and Camilla the Chicken hanging out with Kendall Jenner, Adwoa Aboah, Alek Wek, Doutzen Kroes, Lexi Boling, and Stella Tennant on the streets of New York. That mega cast was captured by Alasdair McLellan and styled by Grand.

As if that’s not enough to make you want to pick up the new issue, expect the following: studio portraits of pioneering women from Susan Sarandon, Iman, and Sally Field shot by Patrick Demarchelier; Jennifer Connelly in a feature shot by Craig McDean and styled by Marie-Amélie SauvéAlice Hawkins photographs Big Sur’s dramatic bohemians and landscapes; an interview with Francesco Risso at Marni on the big shoes he’s trying to fill at the Italian house; Inez & Vinoodh’s Jessica Miller shoot; and London designers Antony Price and Rifat Ozbek on their high-octane glamour alongside a shoot starring Kate Moss and Kesewa Aboah in pieces from their archives. ‘Their belief in the transcendence and escapism of glamour has never relented, regardless of how infatuated with down-to-earth matters fashion might become from time to time,” said Grand, who styled the shoot. “As Oscar Wilde said, ‘We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.’ We would do well to learn from their example and start looking up.”
