They’ve spent a whole lot of time together lately but photo-opps aside, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton aren’t quite BFFs — at least not on a maid of honor-level.
It was widely reported on Monday that Markle selected someone other than Kate Middleton as her right-hand for her wedding day. As a source told Entertainment Tonight, Markle has chosen “one of her closest friends who has stood by her for many years before meeting Harry.” While it hasn’t been confirmed (and won’t be until the big day), it can be all but assumed that the bride’s BFF Jessica Mulroney will fill the maid of honor duties. Mulroney is Markle’s stylist and confidante — Markle and Prince Harry even took refuge at Mulroney’s home in Toronto to hide from paparazzi when word of their relationship first broke. According to Vanity Fair, Prince Harry got the best friend’s approval after he met Mulroney’s young children. He “was a big hit with the couple’s three young children‚ 7-year-old twins Brian and John, and their 4-year-old daughter, Isobel…He won the kids over in an instant. He was brilliant with them and I think what swung it for Meghan was how good Harry was with them.”
Mulroney has also reportedly been helping Markle through the wedding gown selection process with an Us Weekly reporter tweeting that “sources tell me that Meghan Markle has officially picked a wedding dress designer and had her first fitting at Kensington Palace last week,” and that “BFF and bridal expert Jessica Mulroney is guiding Meghan though the process”.

Right now only a small, select group of people know the designer’s name, so don’t expect to find out any time soon. Even Harry made himself scarce during the first fitting!

And while Kate is very much in the running as new Markle squad member, she will not be Markle’s bridal bestie on the big day. As the ET source put it, “Meghan won’t be looking to Kate to serve” — particularly as Kate will have just given birth to her third child.
