(NEW YORK) Girls night out, like you’ve never seen it before: To premiere the third season of the cult-fave sitcom Girls, HBO and The Cinema Society took over Jazz at Lincoln Center’s gargantuan space, complete with a red carpet, a massive screening, and a hipster-approved afterparty. The leading ladies of the night (and the show) properly gussied up for the premiere: Lena Dunham donned Rochas, Allison Williams opted for head-to-toe Dior, Jemima Kirke in a silky Geminola get-up, and Zosia Mamet bedecked in Saint Laurent.
Before episodes one, two, and seven were screened, the red carpet hosted a bevy of stars and cast members. Perpetuating rumors of Dunham’s February cover gig for Vogue was the appearance of Anna Wintour, who was bundled up in a furry Prada coat. Wintour even posed for a photo op with Dunham, aka the actress/director/writer/everything. Editorial darlings on hand during the over-the-top eve included Amy Astley, Joanna Coles, and Deborah Needleman. Holding up the model front? Karlie Kloss and Hilary Rhoda. As for designers, Rebecca Minkoff, Nanette Lepore, Cynthia Rowley, Chris Benz, and Zac Posen came out for the occasion. A coterie of the show’s guest stars also made an appearance, including the likes of Jenna Lyons, Kim Gordon, and Danielle Brooks. But Dunham still has more guest stars on her list, admitting that she’d love to invite “Gloria Steinem, Daniel Day Lewis, and Pam Grier,” on her show. She added, “And I think Kendrick Lamar would make a nice addition to our cast. He’s really busy though.”
While the show has become ubiquitous for smoldering sex scenes, that doesn’t make the cast quite comfortable with all the action. “It’s awkward. Of course it’s awkward. We’re actors and we’re very professional, but my head is still between [someone’s] legs for three hours,” explained Kirke.
After guests streamed out of the theatre post-screening, they were lead into the most Brooklyn-esque fête on this side of Manhattan. While plates of apps were distributed by plaid-clad waiters, there were also cocktails mixed with David’s Tea, and an array of artisanal bites for all. It wouldn’t be a proper Girls Night without a makeover booth courtesy of Cargo and a quick mani salon, of course. Completing the scene was an actual car from a G train, which was quite possibly the most Instagrammed image from the whole event.
But when was the last time Williams rode the G train to Brooklyn? “I went to see a concert at the Barclays Center, and then I went out to dinner with some friends in Park Slope.” Just like any average Girl in New York, right?
