Elizabeth Hurley Revisits the Versace Dress That Put Her on the Map in 1994

by Charles Manning

In 1994, actor Elizabeth Hurley burst onto the scene and into the collective consciousness when she wore a black Versace dress with oversized gold safety pins to the UK premier of her then-boyfriend Hugh Grant’s latest film, “Four Weddings and a Funeral.”

Twenty five years later, Hurley is back at it in an updated version of the original scene-stealing dress for the April 2019 issue of Harper’s Bazaar and waxing nostalgic about her infamous fashion moment. “I was so unprepared for what happened that night,” Hurley told the magazine. “I urgently needed to find a dress to wear for Hugh’s premiere, and in those days I had no idea about fashion. I remember going to an office where they literally fished a dress out of a white plastic bag. I took it home and did my own hair and makeup, fighting Hugh for the mirror, which wasn’t even full-length, in our tiny one-bedroom flat. It was all very unglamorous compared to how things get done these days.”

Hurley was allowed to keep the original safety pin dress and apparently it still fits, although you’d best not hold your breath waiting for her to wear it out on the red carpet again any time soon. “I don’t exercise, but I am very active. But just because it still fits doesn’t mean I would wear it today — it wouldn’t be appropriate!”
