For model and the eternally shirtless Eian Scully, creating a tasty hot sauce was a no-brainer! The Soul Artist Management mod and budding entrepreneur tells The Daily how he came up with HotBoy, an aptly named product for all, and why this might just be the beginning of his food empire.
How did this come about?
As a model and fitness expert, healthy eating has always been an important part of my lifestyle. A lot of healthy food tends to be a bit bland, so I’ve always reached for hot sauce to add flavor. Most hot sauce is just spice, so I wanted to create something that is packed with flavor and spice without adding extra calories or chemicals.
Where did you even begin to start after you came up with the idea?
I did a ton of thorough research on different hot sauces and the type of ingredients and flavor I wanted. After doing rounds of testing, I pulled together a list of ingredients I thought would work well together. The hero ingredients being smoked jalapeño for spice with a more complex flavor, and real maple syrup for just a tease of sweetness– and to stay true to my Canadian roots, of course. From there I vetted a few local producers. It was always really important to me to have the sauce be made in New York in small batches. Once we found the right partner, we got to work on testing samples. We did about 10 rounds and took over 10 months to land the right formula.
What differentiates the product with others in this category?
The flavor! Our first sauce, Classic Hottie is a well rounded and approachable hot sauce that is great on literally everything. I like to think of it as a condiment, put it on everything from burgers and chicken wings, to your pizza and eggs– even your Bloody Mary. The sauce is unique with the heat from smoked jalapeños and a hint of real maple syrup. It’s also all natural, made in New York in small batches.
This must seem like a dumb question but…How did the name HotBoy come about?
Not a dumb question at all. My business partner, Antoni had the idea and immediately I knew it was a winner. It has a ring to it, it’s memorable and fun. This is my first company within the consumer goods space, so I wanted it to be uplifting and fun, not ever taking it too seriously. I also think when you’re gifted HotBoy or you see it on a shelf, you get a little kick out of the name.
Totally. What are some foods that you pair it with?
I’m really not exaggerating when I say I put it on everything. I’ve had a lot of fun testing it out on different things, but my favorites have been pizza, burgers, eggs, wings, in a Bloody Mary, in tuna salad. It’s also really good as a steak sauce! I recently put it on some deviled eggs for Thanksgiving and it was a huge hit with the family. The sauce is about a 4/10 on the heat scale, so it’s approachable for everyone, even people that don’t love hot sauce.
Where can people buy Hot Boy hot sauce?
Right now we are mostly selling on our website www.theofficialhotboy.com and a few small stores around New York!
This is a great stocking stuffer! When do orders need to be placed to get it by Christmas?
We have a lot of orders going out for the holidays, so I would suggest ordering by December 17th to be safe!
You’ve also created some merchandise to go along with the sauce. What’s available?
Yes! We have two tanks in black and white– my new go-to for gym sessions. A HOTBOY black on black t-shirt, this is actually my wife’s favorite & steals mine all the time. And most recently we launched two hats with embroidered HOTBOY on it.
Now that you’ve conquered hot sauce, any other food products you’re thinking of putting your own spin on?
As an athlete and model I have always been a fan of a high protein diet to stay lean and feel great, so I’ve been keeping an eye out for high protein snacks. I don’t want to make any promises just yet, so you’ll have to stay tuned to see where we go with it!
What does Eian Scully want for Christmas?
I’m actually not a huge fan of gifts, I’d much rather experiences. I’m really looking forward to time with my friends and family over the holidays! As well as my trip to Puerto Rico for New Year’s Eve!
