Madonna Tells D&G To “Think Before You Speak”

by Eddie Roche

Madonna has finally weighed in on the Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana controversy, writing on Instagram last night: “All babies contain a soul however they come to this earth and their families. There is nothing synthetic about a soul!! So how can we dismiss IVF and surrogacy? Every soul comes to us to teach us a lesson. God has his hand in everything even technology! We are arrogant to think Man does anything on his own. As above so below! Think before you speak.,,,,,,,,,,, ‪#‎livingforlove‬” -Madonna” The Queen of Pop has appeared in several campaigns for the Italian designers. She joins Courtney Love, Ryan Murphy, Ricky Martin, Andy Cohen, and most notably Elton John and David Furnish in speaking out about the designers’ surprising views opposing  gay people having families of their own “You are born to a mother and a father, or at least that’s how it should be,” Dolce said in the interview. “I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog.”

In a piece in The New York Times yesterday, writer Jacob Bernstein noted that most of the major American fashion editors he reached out to declined to comment on the controversy. One person who did go on the record to comment? KCD president Ed Filipowski, who told The Times: “They’re alienating a large portion of the customer base. They’re alienating women or anyone trying to have a child in vitro and they’re alienating their L.G.B.T. constituency. It’s a serious issue.” The designers don’t seem to show any backing down on their comments, sitting down with CNN to clarify their words with Dolce saying,  “I believe in the traditional family. It is impossible to change my culture for something different. It’s me…I respect all the world, all the culture.” Gabbana revealed he doesn’t have a problem with IVF. Earlier this week the designers’ online magazine, Swide, lost editorial director Giuliano Federico, who resigned due to the controversy.
