Macy’s To Unveil Off-Price Macy’s Backstage Stores In New York

by Alexandra Ilyashov

Macy’s is entering the discount domain: The department store will debut a series of off-price stores called Macy’s Backstage, in the same vein of Saks Off Fifth and Nordstrom Rack. Four locations will open this fall in Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island; if the concept is a hit, expect more outposts of Macy’s Backstage to roll out in the future. Expect amenities like wifi and cafes on the premises of Macy’s Backstage locations.

As for the tristate area competition, Nordstrom Rack arrived in New York in 2010 with a Union Square location, and Saks Off Fifth has currently has locations in the likes of Elizabeth, N.J., and at Tanger Outlets in Long Island, with an NYC location slated for One Liberty Plaza in downtown Manhattan come 2017. Currently, Nordstrom Rack has 177 locations, with plans for 300 outposts by 2020, while Saks Off Fifth has 77 stores and a goal of 200 locations.
