Kiehl’s Is Going Paraben-Free In 2019

Kiehl’s is making a big change in 2019. The brand is officially going paraben-free! By the end of next year the company promises that all formulas in production will be paraben-free. The newly formulated products will be phased onto shelves as the old stock depletes. So why is this such a major change?

Parabens are a type of preservative that were originally invented in the 1950s. They are added to beauty products to prevent the growth of fungi, bacteria, and yeast, thus prolonging the life of your stuff. Though parabens have been used throughout the beauty and skincare industries for decades, research has shows that they can be absorbed into our skin.

Elle UK reports that parabens can “disrupt hormone function by mimicking oestrogen,” the overproduction of which can lead to the growth of tumors in breasts. Though there is no proof that parabens cause breast cancer, there is a pretty concerning link between the two. Additionally, parabens have also been found in marine animals. Naturally, beauty consumers are asking for alternatives.

One of the first Kiehl’s new-formula products to hit the shelves will be the brand’s best-selling Ultra Facial Cream. It took five years, and 114 tries, but the company has promised that its new version is “virtually indistinguishable” from the original. The new Ultra Facial Cream — which will also exclude the exfoliator Carbamide, and the ph balancer T.E.A. — will hit store shelves December 26.
