Gucci Fall 2015

Following up on Alessandro Michele‘s debut menswear collection as the new creative director of Gucci, the womenswear collection he debuted in Milan today mirrored the androgynous vibe that he has introduced as the new aesthetic for Gucci. Androgyny, of course, has been a theme on runways for quite some time now. It’s also been making its way into mainstream television and culture as the talk about gender identity has been an increasingly hot topic. So, culturally speaking, this collection was right on target, but is it going to fly off the racks for the existing Gucci clientele? Those accustomed to the smoldering sex appeal associated with the brand in the Tom Ford era and those that stuck with the brand through Frida Giannini’s take on Italian glam might be a bit disappointed. However, Michele’s hipper, edgier take on the Gucci look might bring in a new clientele. The slouchy floral suits will likely get a fair amount of play in fashion glossies and on “it” girls and street style stars. A shiny leather green skirt stood out and a fur coat and a few floral dresses might find their way into the homes of Gucci’s existing clientele. That being said, they’ll probably pair those looks with some classic Gucci heels instead of furry flat loafers. Birds were also a motif, done as appliques on knit sweaters or dresses. Michele’s career is definitely taking flight with his new appointment, but whether he will continue to blossom chez Gucci will, naturally, depend on sales.
