Giambattista Valli Couture Spring 2015

by Daniel Chivu

Icy pastels and splendid flora, cut with sharp, sophisticated noir suiting were on tap for Spring chez Giambattista Valli. His grown-up take on girlishness for Spring involved gauzy tea-length skirts, some nearly tutu-like in volume, slung over swingy trou (a nod to Janis Joplin, as Valli told Style.com, mixed in with some Coco Chanel references, thanks to those boxy, fitted jackets), interspersed with standout frocks in delightful and surprisingly diverse silhouettes. Whether patterned, drop-waisted, and voluminously amped up at the hemline or sheer, sheathed, and erupting in ruffles at the shoulders, there’s a party getup for every Valli girl in this collection. The flouncy sherbet-hued gowns with silk cloqué skirts were delightfully feminine, paired with massive matching ruffled tulle toppers that playfully resembled boas at first glance. Regal but un-fusty, these getups were pretty divine, dressier versions of the mini-skirted versions that preceded. Whether floor-grazing 0r gam-showcasing, Valli’s plays with proportions were flattering and just plain fun.
