Last night, Anna Wintour visited Teen Vogue turf when she attended The Cinema Society premiere of Sony Pictures Classics’ upcoming indie The Diary of a Teenage Girl at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema in Manhattan. It’s never too early to start scouting for a future Vogue girl, and the film’s star Bel Powley is about as promising as it gets. Set in 1976 and based on the popular Phoebe Gloeckner novel of the same name, the story is about the account of the sexual awakening of Minnie Goetze (Powley) who has a disturbing relationship with her mother’s boyfriend and documents the experience via tape recorder. Krisitin Wiig tones it down in a dramatic yet quirky performance as the mom with Alexander Skarsgård in his best work ever as the beau. But it’s Powley who we have the hearts for. Love.
She and Skarsgård (sadly not in drag) were both in attendance as well as another name to keep an eye on: writer and director Marielle Heller, in her directorial debut. Joining Anna for the screening were boyfriend J. Shelby Bryan, Seth Meyers, Jennifer Westfeldt, Imogen Poots, Hill Harper, Kevin Sorbo, Valerie Simpson, Chaske Spencer, Ari Graynor, Prabal Gurung, Nicole Miller, Jordan Barrett, and Tali Lennox. Guests carried on to Jimmy at The James Hotel for a party and a glimpse of a more glam and slimmed down Powley. Teenagers today. The film (two thumbs up from us) opens in limited release this weekend.
