(NEW YORK) As a warm escape from the winter chill, Ann Taylor’s Summer 2014 collection took editors on a trip from Times Square to Capri last eve. The looks in the preview were apropos for a summer sail: breezy white skirts, nautical knits, a pale pink dress, and sailor-approved jackets. Combined with anchoring accessories, like heavy gold chains, a bold black belt, and whimsical clutches, Ann Taylor’s creative director, Lisa Axelson, proved her staying power in the execution of chic-approved work wear. She also filled your Daily in on her dream jaunt (it’s not as exotic as one might expect!) and her chaussures of choice for tackling the snowy streets.

Tell us the backstory on this collection, please!
Summer 2014 is all about a dream vacation. For me, it’s always about mixing dreams with reality; so there’s a fashion dream, a romantic dream, and a realistic dream that comes with trying to dress for everyday life as a working woman. For summer, the dream is about going on that faraway vacation and bringing that feeling and glow to our everyday lives.
Where would these dream vacations take place?
We were thinking Capri and Positano. We had all of these fabulous images on our concept wall of my design team’s dream vacation. We started thinking about how to take the classic American style of Ann Taylor and infuse it with the sophistication and sexiness of European dressing.
Did you go on a vacation to inspire your designs?
I didn’t! It’s really all about the dream in my own head. As a very busy woman, I don’t have time for the big luxurious vacation.
So, what fits the bill for your ideal getaway?
My dream vacation is actually staying home these days!
Which look was the biggest hit with editors?
I had a lot of comments around the long navy tube skirt and the stitched nautical sweater. It felt a bit Nautical, but also flirty and fun.
On a cold winter day like this, how are you staying warm?
Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite way to stay warm is outerwear. I’m actually wearing one of our toppers from Fall 2014. So, I’m cheating and giving everyone a sneak peek!
What do your snow boots look like?
My favorite ones are a pair I picked up in Milan. They’re rubber, with a wedge, and the whole front is covered in fur. They’re chic, but can totally handle the snow and the ice.
