Carol Lim and Humberto Leon headed to suburbia for their Opening Ceremony Resort 2016 collection, but as you can imagine, the clothes were anything but conventional. The OC girl this season is the cool, sartorially inclined woman longing to escape her idyllic settings. Pieces like custom prints and jacquards derived inspiration from community landscapes such as the asymmetrical gird of parking lots, manicured lawns (such as the grassy green hues in a long wool coat), and topiary inspirations on lurex. Then, there was the canine theme. Dogs, a suburban fixtures, were worked very literally into a shirt, which featured the shaggy dreads of a Komondor or in the pattern of a grey and white skirt suit. Unisex varsity jackets and jersey bear signs reading “Missing Dog” or “Beware of the Dog” and cheeky catch phrases like “Frise, I’m a Bichon!”. A stellar laser-cut black dress features wavy sleeves meant to evoke tire track patterns. The fins of ’50s cars were the starting point for sharply pleated dresses and skirts. If only suburbia was really this chic!
