As the house of Fendi celebrates 90 years in the biz, creative director Karl Lagerfeld opens up to Harper’s Bazaar on working with the brand for 51 years (unheard of these days), the longest collaboration in fashion history. What’s the secret to a half century partnership? “We work so well together. I never had the feeling I was married, so it was like an open-marriage situation,” Lagerfeld said. “I’ve kept the passion because there is no exclusivity. I need the fresh air from the outside to see what’s going on. If you put me in a cage, I am worthless.”

“I’m easy to work with. I’m not on an ego trip,” he added on what separates him from other designers. “I’m only interested in the craft and the design and to work with people I enjoy. Many other designers have an ego problem. Most of them do. That’s really the problem.”

Lagerfeld also photographed November cover star Gigi Hadid in Fendi Haute Couture for the article, which is on newsstands and can be read in full here.
