Reed Krakoff Scores The Whitney's American Art Award

by The Daily Front Row

Another day, another award for Reed Krakoff! The designer and patron of the arts is being honored by The Whitney Museum at a gala dinner being held on April 16th at Highline Stages. The award will be presented by The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation to Krakoff alongside fellow honorees Martin Z. Margulies, a Miami-based developer, and attorney Michael Ward Stout. The award itself has been created this year by photographer Anne Collier; it’s being doled out to honor the trio’s individual commitments to American art as well as to New York’s cultural institutions. Krakoff’s award comes on the heels of being honored for his philanthropic efforts at the Henry Street Settlement Gala last week.

Krakoff has long supported the art world, including artists like Kiki Smith and designed dresses inspired by artists like Ad Reinhardt. Krakoff is also a longtime fan of artist John Beuys and as of last year, according to an interview with ArtInfo, was acquiring pieces by Allan McCollum, Julian Opie, Candida Höfer, Joel Shapiro, and Tom Sachs. With a collection like that, we’d love to be a fly on Mr. Krakoff’s wall…
