The buzz is at full blast regarding Hedi Slimane’s creative choix at Saint Laurent. In his latest move, the designer enlisted Courtney Love to front the brand’s music meets fashion campaign, which will also feature fellow rockers like Marilyn Manson, Kim Gordon, and Ariel Pink. It’s only natural that he would enlist Love as she was the assumed inspiration behind his grunge heavy Fall 2013 collection. She even applauded him post-show by tweeting: “Having gasms at the idea of rich ladies buying what we used to wear, finally someone got the look exact, no beanies.”
Quelle surprise! The motto vibrating from Hedi Slimane’s runway at the Grand Palais today was “go grunge or go home” as the designer tapped into the gritty, alterna-rock movement popularized by Cobain and co. in the early ’90s. All the prominent Seattle-based wardrobe themes were reprised: the ubiquitous plaid flannel, slashed leather leggings, loose floral frocks offset with buckled boots, and thrift store-esque jackets outfitted with animal spots or crafted from leather or shearling. But the rock ‘n’ roll road trip left the essence of Saint Laurent dangling in the rearview mirror for a barrage of hotpants and dom-inspired leather minis that aren’t exactly sales fodder for longtime YSL devotees.

Zzzzz…Saint Laurent’s first campaign starring Beck Hansen (not Beckham) and British mod Edie Campbell gives us the snores. Been there, done that, have the t-shirt. Hedi Slimane shot the black and white ads (surprise, surprise!) in Los Angeles. Historians will recall that Hedi and his buddy Beck worked together on the 2005 22-minute theme song for Dior Homme.
