Model and Fashion Enthusiast Oren B. Segal Shares His Take on The Industry

by Amir Bakian

The fashion world is an ever-evolving industry, inspiring creatives and impacting popular culture throughout the years. What was once limited to the pages of magazines and in-person events can now be experienced firsthand through fashion influencers on social media platforms. Thanks to creators shining a light on different trends, some old fashion styles are also making a comeback, and new trends are dominating the industry. So, what’s next for the fashion industry? To help us better understand the field and what the future looks like for the fashion sector, we spoke with model and fashion enthusiast Oren B. Segal who shares his take.

Q: So, what drew you to fashion?
Oddly enough, I wasn’t really big into fashion when I was younger. My affinity for the industry was sparked by my diverse background and being encouraged to explore all my interests. My parents are both Israeli immigrants who live in New York, and this gave me early exposure to not only seeing the world from a global perspective but also appreciating the fashion that comes out of New York City’s unique character. These two factors gave me a one-of-a-kind perspective, and that creativity is reflected in my style.

In addition to being a fashion enthusiast, I’m also a musician. I’ve had the privilege to perform with notable orchestras and express myself musically. It’s commonly known that the music and entertainment industry is a major source of fashion trends. This made my transition into the fashion industry a bit smoother, as I learned to stand out early on.

Q: What is Oren B’s fashion style?
I think I’m more of a bold person when it comes to my style, and I don’t usually conform to trends. This is one of the reasons I believe I stand out in the fashion niche. One of my goals is to show others that you do not have to fit in or conform to other people’s ideas of what it means to be “fashionable.”

While my style has changed over the years as I experimented with different clothes, fits, and designs, my number one rule is to choose attire that showcases my personality. I believe that style is a nonverbal way of communicating with others and showing your personality without saying a word. For that reason, it’s incredibly liberating when you stop caring what other people think. As long as you’re comfortable with who you are, you can share your authentic story with the rest of the world.

Q: The fashion industry has experienced drastic changes in the last few years. Having been in the industry for some time, how would you relate past and present fashion trends?
From an overall global perspective, fashion trends come and go, and it’s common for past styles to find a way back. However, the fashion industry can be quite unpredictable, and you can’t always predict which trends will return. Recently, we’ve seen older fashion styles take over the industry like mullets and the so-called “mom” jeans making a comeback. But while we have seen new styles emerge, not much has changed because of the recursive cycle and nature of the world, especially in style.

Q: In a fast-paced world like the fashion industry, how do you stay up-to-date regarding fashion?
I don’t. I tend not to follow trends because I’ve taken inspiration from different countries and cultures to curate my own fashion style. In my mind, fashion is more about creating a timeless style, not a timely one.
